STUDENT COUNCIL
|
The purpose of the Baranoff Student Council is to foster pride, increase awareness of students’ rights and responsibilities, and to encourage their leadership skills. The Council also works to serve the community and to encourage the participation of the entire student body. The members of the council are comprised of students in grades 2-5 who serve in the capacity of class representatives (two per class) or special members (officer candidates who were not elected). Fifth graders may serve in the capacity of Student Council officers including president, vice-president, treasurer, sergeant-at-arms, secretary). Council members experience the democratic process by listening to the officer candidates’ speeches via short circuit TV and marking a secret voting ballot. Votes are tallied and followed by an installation ceremony for all officers, special members, class representatives, and their families. With the exception of running for officer in 5th grade, representatives may serve only once during their elementary school years in order to allow more students the opportunity to serve. All elections are held in November of each school year. The council has various responsibilities throughout the year. All members meet once a month and report back to their class. An on-going fundraiser is the Box Tops for Education drive. Money raised goes towards a school improvement and/or a charity. A community outreach project is the Capital Area Food Bank canned food drive. To promote school spirit the council sponsors monthly spirit days at school. For more information please contact the school.
