Each year, parents look for ways to help children see beyond the commercialism of the holidays.  the following ideas are relevant year round, but this is a great time of year to begin the commitment to give of oneself.

 

 "Children look at their parents' examples of generosity, compassion, and selflessness and carry these family values on to the next generation," says author Terri Khonsari. "There are many ways to be philanthropic, and everyone can find a way to include philanthropy in their lives," she adds. Encourage your children to give their time, talents and material belongings by doing the same yourself. Consider these five ways to teach your children how to enjoy the act of giving:

The actions of legislative bodies can have a profound effect on the education and well-being of children, and Texas PTA serves as the voice for Texas children in many legislative endeavors.  Texas PTA supports legislation that improves health, well-being and educational opportunites for every child.  Successful implementation of their legislative positions is characterized by people working toegther to assure wise legislative decisions through knowledge of the process and an understanding of the issues.

Sales Tax Holiday Now Includes School Supplies PDF Print E-mail
Tax-Free Weekend is August 20-22
 
The 81st Texas Legislature recently passed House Bill 1801 expanding the list of items qualifying for exemption from Texas state and local sales and use taxes during the annual sales tax holiday in August. Effective this year, in addition to clothes, footwear and some backpacks, Texas families also get a sales tax break on school supplies priced less than $100 purchased for use by a student in an elementary or secondary school. 
 
Visit the Texas PTA Web site for a Flier for Retailers, which includes an all-inclusive list of qualifying school supplies. Encourage all parents to print out this flier and take it shopping with them!
